The in office fluoride treatment is much stronger than the one found in toothpaste and fluoride mouth rinses. According to the AAPD in office fluoride treatments are effective in reducing caries in children with moderate or high caries risk. Children with moderate caries risk should receive a professional fluoride treatment at least every 6 months; those with high caries risk should receive greater frequency of professional fluoride applications (i.e., every 3-6 months).
